DMDII Dips Into Education With Plans For The First Ever Digital Manufacturing MOOC

DMDII Work Space
Chicago’s Digital Manufacturing and Design Innovation Institute (DMDII) wants to train the next generation of manufacturers.
The digital manufacturing technology hub from UI Labs announced it is offering $500,000 in project funding to develop a series of MOOCs (Massive Online Open Course) on digital manufacturing and design with MOOC company Coursera. The series of open enrollment, on-demand courses would allow existing engineers and student to gain extra experience and knowledge in the field of digital manufacturing.
They're calling it the "Digital Manufacturing and Design" (DM&D) Specialization. The DM&D will include up to nine courses, 20 to 40 hours of lecture, and evaluations such as quizzes and tests. Though topics are yet to be decided, DMDII said it will focus on three areas: advanced analysis, intelligent machining, and advanced manufacturing enterprise. Though courses will be free, there will be a small fee in order to gain the certificate.
“As with all our programs, DMDII intends to bring together the best partners and the most qualified experts to help usher in this transformation sweeping American manufacturing,” said Dr. Dean Bartles, the Chief Manufacturing Officer at UI LABS and Executive Director of DMDII in a statement. “This Specialization will serve as the premier information tool for students and the current workforce looking to better understand digital manufacturing."
DMDII anticipates getting the courses online in late 2016 or early 2017.
